IAA Transportation 2024: MAN to install model year 2025 trucks with new engine and gearbox

MAN TGX with PowerLion driveline

Germany – At IAA Transportation 2024, held between 17-22 September in Hanover, MAN Truck & Bus SE of Munich, Bavaria announced that its model year 2025 diesel combustion trucks will be powered by a new engine and transmission, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 4%.

Dubbed ‘PowerLion’, the new diesel driveline consists of a new ‘D3066’ (“D30” for short) engine and ‘TipMatic 14’ automated manual transmission. The D30, which will be available in six power levels between 380 and 560 horsepower (2,100 to 2,800 Nm), boasts a maximum efficiency of over 50%, making it one of the most advanced commercial vehicle engines in the world, according to MAN. This high efficiency was achieved by harmonising two parts: the fuel rail, with an injection pressure of up to 1,800 bar and 10-hole injection nozzles; and the turbocharger, with two power range-dependent charging geometries. The option of a compression release brake provides the D30 with an engine braking force of up to 355 kW.
