USA / Germany – In September, powertrain manufacturer Cummins Inc of Columbus, Indiana announced a partnership with components giant Robert Bosch GmbH of Gerlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany to reduce the costs and difficulties associated with accessing and updating a connected commercial vehicle via its CAN bus.

The two companies have launched a project called ‘Eclipse CANought’ which focuses on the heart of a commercial vehicle’s serial communications network, the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. The CAN bus connects a vehicle’s electronic control units (ECUs), acting as its “central nervous system”. The partners will develop open-source software that will standardise how access is granted to the CAN bus, therefore making it easier to develop compatible software applications for every kind of connected commercial vehicle.
