Scania and Fortescue to collaborate on self-driving road train for mining operations

Scania mining truck pulling three trailers

Sweden / Australia – In September, Scania AB, a subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Södertälje, Sweden, announced a joint development agreement with metal mining company Fortescue of Perth, Western Australia on autonomous road trains composed of a self-driving truck pulling three trailers.

The idea behind the collaboration is to combine Scania’s self-driving truck technology with Fortescue’s own fleet management system to test and validate a fully autonomous road train in real mining operations. A Scania ‘R770’ tractor would pull a combined weight of 240 tonnes, distributed across three laden trailers.
