USAWabash National Corporation, a truck body and trailer manufacturer based in Lafayette, Indiana, has been awarded USD1.6m from the U.S. Department of Energy as part of a project to use solar energy in the transport of refrigerated goods.

Together with the Center for Composite Materials at the University of Delaware, Wabash will develop a refrigerated truck body/trailer solution made with composite materials and installed with lightweight solar panels. Wabash will contribute its ‘EcoNex’ lightweight box, made chiefly with composite materials and without any metal crossbars, whereas the University of Delaware will contribute recycled carbon fibre for strengthening and lightening the truck body/trailer further.
