India - Ashok Leyland Ltd of Chennai, and Allison Transmission India Pvt Ltd, also of Chennai and a subsidiary of Allison Transmission Holdings Inc of Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, have collaborated to introduce the first Ashok Leyland 12m low-floor city bus equipped with a fully automatic transmissions for the state of Tamil Nadu.

Allison T 280 transmission is paired with the Ashok Leyland H-series 6-cylinder four-valve 184-kilowatt (246 horsepower) diesel engine, delivered from Allison's manufacturing facility in Oragadam, Chennai, India. The low-floor buses, which are specially designed to accommodate passengers with disabilities, will replace buses equipped with manual transmission. When the bus stops and the middle door opens, the Allison T 280's transmission shifts to neutral to prevent creeping, ensuring passenger safety. Once the door closes and the driver releases the brake, the transmission re-engages for a smooth start. This feature is vital for safe and punctual operations.
