Scania develops range-extended battery electric truck for DHL

Hybrid truck developed by Scania for DHL

Sweden / GermanyScania AB, a subsidiary of Traton based in Södertälje, Sweden, has developed a hybrid truck for German delivery company DHL Group with a petrol-powered1 range extender designed to provide operational flexibility.

The truck developed by Scania is a 230-kW series hybrid running primarily on battery-electric power, with a 120-kW petrol-powered generator to provide backup energy. While the hybrid truck’s electric range is reduced due to a smaller battery capacity (416 kWh), the vehicle has a much higher range than its pure electric equivalent: between 650 and 800 kilometres, compared to 550 kilometres in Scania’s battery electric model. The manufacturer claims that 80-90% of DHL’s needs can be met by the batteries alone.
