Italy opens first megawatt charging stop for electric trucks

Megawatt truck charging station in Verona

Italy – Italy’s first megawatt truck charging station officially opened in Verona, a strategic logistics hub in northern Italy. The high-power charging site is part of a pilot initiative to accelerate the decarbonisation of heavy-duty road transport along trans-European freight corridors. The charging infrastructure was developed and installed by Kempower OYJ, a Finnish electric charging solutions provider based in Lahti, Finland. Kempower manufactured and shipped four units of its 1.2 MW Megawatt Charging System (MCS) from its European production facilities, marking the company’s first MCS deployment in Southern Europe.

The project is a collaboration between Autostrada del Brennero, Verona Interporto, and Enel X Way, who collectively aim to build scalable charging solutions for battery-electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) travelling through Italy’s northern industrial corridor. The site is currently located within Interporto Quadrante Europa, one of Europe’s largest inland freight terminals, and is accessible to commercial electric fleets operating locally and on international routes.
