Germany / UK – UK electric motor manufacturer, Advanced Electric Machines Ltd (AEM), has successfully brought its rare-earth-free motor into series production for SAF-HOLLAND’s (SAF-Holland SE) electric axle system, SAF TRAKr. The development marks a significant sustainability milestone for both companies and offers a new lightweight regenerative braking solution to commercial fleets across Europe.

First announced in 2021, SAF TRAKr is a regenerative axle that recovers energy during braking and overrun phases, storing it in batteries for powering auxiliary devices such as refrigeration units or hydraulic lifts. However, for this to work efficiently, the axle required a lightweight and compact motor, one that didn’t compromise payload or installation space. SAF-HOLLAND turned to AEM to design such a solution, leading to the development of the HDRM150 motor. Built without rare-earth magnets or copper windings, the HDRM150 is fully recyclable and delivers 16kW of continuous power. It is also air-cooled, making it a low-maintenance, weight-saving choice ideal for trailer applications.
