India’s rigid truck market segments see mixed trends in Q1 FY2025-26

India - Sales of medium and heavy-duty rigid trucks (7.5t GVW and above) in India declined by 3.3% in the first quarter of the new fiscal year of April to June 2025 (Q1 / FY2025-26), falling to 51,529 units from 53,015 units in the same quarter of the previous year. Exports, however, surged by 38.0% to 3,005 units compared with 2,178 units in Q1 FY2024-25, while production slipped marginally by 1.0% to 61,033 units from 61,636 units in the same period.
In the medium-duty segment (7.5t to 12t GVW), sales grew by 2.2%, reaching 9,509 units against 9,304 units a year earlier. Exports in this category rose by 32.6%, while production fell by 9.4%. VECV leads with a steady gain in sales of 14.9%, while Tata Motors in second also performed well, up by 9.4%; both these gains at the expense of Ashok Leyland, which saw sales plummet 30.9% during the period. Incongruously, Tata Motors’ production levels this year and the previous year exceeded the quarter sales implying a strong order book for the next quarter.
