USANikola Corporation, a developer of zero-emissions truck concepts and hydrogen fuelling technology-based in Phoenix, Arizona, has been awarded a grant of approximately USD2m by the U.S. Department of Energy for research into integrated autonomous fuelling systems for hydrogen fuel stations. The funding is part of the department’s USD36m package towards research into hydrogen (Hydrogen and Fuel Cells R&D FY 2021 FOA).

Autonomous fuelling is intended to advance rapid fuelling of heavy-duty vehicles – more than 80kg of hydrogen in 15 minutes – while reducing labour costs and without compromising on safety. Nikola will also undertake research developing sensors to monitor station performance as well as leaks.
