Daimler Truck begins testing fuel-cell truck with liquid hydrogen

Daimler Truck prototype being refuelled with liquid hydrogen

Germany – On 27 June, Daimler Truck AG of Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Baden-Württemberg kickstarted trials of a fuel-cell electric truck fuelled by liquid hydrogen in order to determine the fuel’s merits and demerits relative to gaseous hydrogen.

The trials began with a test drive of the vehicle in the town of Wörth am Rhein, attended by the Minister for Economic Affairs of Rhineland-Palatinate, Daniela Schmitt. The prototype truck is based on the first ‘GenH2’ truck tested last year, which used gaseous hydrogen instead. The new vehicle is refuelled at a prototype filling station installed by Air Liquide: cryogenic liquid hydrogen at minus 253 degrees Celsius fills up two 40 kg tanks mounted on either side of the chassis. The tanks are insulated well enough to negate the need for active cooling for “a sufficiently long time”, according to Daimler Truck.
