USALightning eMotors Inc of Loveland, Colorado has announced an expansion to its manufacturing partnership with Collins Bus Corporation of Hutchinson, Kansas for the production of battery-electric Type A school buses, which will now incorporate a General Motors chassis platform.

Bus manufacturer Collins Bus first agreed to work with electrification specialist Lightning eMotors in August last year to produce school buses on the Ford Class 4 chassis platform. Now they will also be working with the GM 4500, a cutaway van chassis best known as the basis for the ‘Silverado’ pickup truck range by Chevrolet. The two companies will take advantage of incentives offered by the federal government, which include a USD1.5bn funding package announced in April and an extra USD500m commitment made available in May exclusively for zero-emission school buses.
