France / Netherlands – In late December, Stellantis NV, an automotive corporation based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, entered negotiations to acquire a substantial stake in Symbio, a French joint venture between Michelin and Faurecia for the manufacture of hydrogen fuel cell systems for commercial vehicles.

Stellantis has already begun producing mid-sized vans powered by hydrogen fuel cells under its Opel subsidiary, and it plans to offer large fuel-cell electric vans to customers in Europe in 2024 and in the USA in 2025. Further, it has hinted at heavy-duty hydrogen truck development in the future. Acquiring a stake in fuel cell systems manufacturer Symbio will facilitate the roll-out of the group’s hydrogen strategy in both regions, according to Stellantis CEO Carlos Taveres.
