German autonomous truck project (ATLAS-L4) moves closer to real road testing

Germany – Multiple German manufacturing companies, including MAN Truck & Bus, Knorr-Bremse, and Bosch, have delivered an update on the research and development project to put autonomous trucks on German motorways by the middle of the decade. Announced in 2022, the project. known as ATLAS-L4* employs trucks built by MAN, the company responsible for the overall system development. MAN has now built a prototype vehicle, with sensors on the roof and sides of the cab. This vehicle will collect data before any driving begins (stage 2). The vehicle has already successfully covered its first kilometres at MAN's Munich test site.
Knorr-Bremse has successfully developed and tested a ‘redundant’ braking system architecture. Furthermore, Bosch has completed the design and testing stage of an error-tolerant steering system. Another milestone is the full implementation of the Control Centre for technical supervision. The web interface now displays the vehicle on a map with all relevant information such as speed and automation status. Finally, MAN and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security AISEC successfully conducted the risk analysis for the project.
