Nikola trucks to use What3words geolocation system

By Bradley Osborne - 24th February 2024

USA / UKNikola Corporation of Phoenix, Arizona, USA has announced that, later this year, it will integrate its Class 8 electric trucks with a geocode system developed by What3words Ltd of London, UK which Nikola claims will improve vehicle navigation and ensure timely deliveries of goods.

‘What3words’ divides the globe into a grid of squares measuring approximately 10 square feet or 3 square metres each and assigns them a unique combination of three random words. Nikola claims that, by navigating to “what3words addresses”, drivers will find their destinations more easily – particularly in cases where a single conventional address has multiple entrances and drop-off points. (The same system was implemented in the ‘Volta Zero’ by Volta Trucks in 2022.)
