European bus market continues its pathway to zero emission operations – reports Chatrou CME Solutions' latest market report

Slide 1: Development alternative drivelines in Western-Europe + Poland for 2012-2019, and then for EU27+UK+ICE+NO+CH from 2020 to 2023.

Europe – The total number of city buses with alternative drivelines in European Union 27 countries plus the UK, Norway (NO), Iceland (ICE) and Switzerland (EU 27+4) totalled 13,466 units  comprising 6,354 electric buses (excludes trolley buses), 4,022 hybrid-electric buses, 2,883 CNG buses and 207, hydrogen (fuel cell) buses, according to market analysis by Wim Chatrou of Chatrou CME Solutions (CME) of The Netherlands – see chart above– Slide 1.

This figure of 13,466 for city buses with alternative drivelines was much higher (+41%) than the 9,543 units registered in 2022, which was due, CME explained, to higher volumes of electric and hybrid-electric buses. Furthermore, the 13,466 city buses with alternative drivelines made up 89% of all 15,142 city bus registrations in 2023 in the EU27+4 countries. This compares with 62.5% (9,543) of the 13,434 city bus registrations in EU27+UK, NO, ICE & CH countries in 2022 with an alternative driveline, according to CME’s figures.
