Slide 1: Development alternative drivelines in Western-Europe + Poland for 2012-2019, and then for EU27+UK+ICE+NO+CH from 2020 to 2024.
Europe – The total number of city buses with alternative drivelines in European Union 27 countries plus the UK, Norway (NO), Iceland (ICE) and Switzerland (EU 27+4) totalled 14,405 units compromising 7,843 electric buses (excludes trolley buses), 3,379 hybrid-electric buses, 2,805 CNG buses and 378 hydrogen (fuel cell) buses, according to market analysis by DVV Media of Germany see chart above– Slide 1.
This figure of 14,405 for city buses with alternative drivelines was marginally higher (+6.5%) than the 13,466 units registered in 2023, which was due, DVV explained, to higher volumes of electric buses. DVV’s slide indicates that demand is strong for city buses with alternative drivelines, with three straight years of constant growth. This streak would have stretched to eight years had it not been for the COVID-19 pandemic, which harmed bus demand from 2021 to 2022.
