USABAE Systems Inc, based in Endicott, New York, has signed an agreement to supply 42 of its electric drive systems for San Francisco’s upcoming fleet of hybrid-electric buses. The buses will be built by New Flyer, which will also handle the integration of BAE’s systems before delivering them to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA).

The Gen3 electric drive system from BAE Systems is designed to offer high performance with low emissions and improved fuel efficiency. Built with cutting-edge materials like silicon carbide (SiC), the system is lightweight, compact, and engineered for optimal electrical efficiency and easier maintenance.

Bob Lamanna, Vice President and General Manager of Power & Propulsion Solutions at BAE Systems said: “BAE Systems’ Gen3 system will help the SFMTA achieve its goals by providing dependable, zero-emission capable technology. These hybrid buses will immediately reduce emissions and improve air quality in the city.”

The Gen3 package includes a traction motor, onboard energy storage, and intelligent power electronics to create a streamlined electric propulsion system. It also features engine start-stop and geofencing capabilities, allowing buses to switch to full electric mode automatically in designated low-emission areas, without needing to plug into the grid.

*Backed by nearly 30 years of electric propulsion experience, BAE Systems has deployed over 19,000 systems worldwide across hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell applications. The technology is developed and supported from the company’s facilities in Endicott, New York, and Rochester, UK.
