Mission / Vision Statement

Mobility drives us. As a technology partner and enabler, we make energy-efficient mobility possible for people and goods. With our drive technologies, we are already fit for the future, and a large number of our solutions and systems are already designed for alternative drives, digitalization and maximum efficiency. We always combine innovative technologies with maximum safety, and accompany operators and manufacturers on the road to resource-saving mobility.

Strategy

We supply innovative technologies and mobility concepts to accommodate the continuing global population growth and urbanization. At the same time, the major issues of the present are driving us forward, above all climate change, which requires us to develop drive technologies that conserve resources and are future-proof. Based on more than 150 years of experience in power transmission, we have developed an unparalleled understanding of the entire drivetrain. This comprehensive expertise allows us to develop system and service offerings that are precisely tailored to the needs of our customers. As a reliable partner with a product portfolio that is ready for the future today – with alternative drives as well as powerful automation and digitalization solutions – we open up new paths for our customers and provide stability in the mobility revolution.

Sustainability Goals

Sustainability forms one of the main pillars of our group’s strategy. To press ahead even more resolutely with its climate protection strategy, Voith has made a voluntary commitment within the framework of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the world’s leading organization for setting climate targets.

Key Developments

2023

Voith announces another important development – the Future Inverter Platform (FIP) – for the VEDS drive system. The new inverter has been specifically designed to meet the requirements in the commercial vehicle segment and will be integrated into future generations of the VEDS. The FIP technology will go into series production without integrated DMU in 2024 and with integrated DMU in 2025.

Since the beginning of 2023, the HD version of the Voith Electrical Drive System (VEDS) has been an integral part of the first H2 truck (FCEV) to be built in Germany: the Paul Hydrogen Power Truck (PH2P).

In order to bundle activities in the field of hydrogen storage systems, Voith plans to establish Voith HySTech GmbH consisting of Voith Composites and hydrogen experts from Voith Turbo.

2022

On 1 January, the Voith Group declared carbon neutrality in all its business operations. This was achieved through a mixture of renewable energy sources and carbon offsets. In future, Voith will also be working on sustainable growth areas such as hydrogen. The company is currently developing a hydrogen storage system for trucks.

The start of series production of the new DIWA NXT automatic transmission from Voith is imminent. As one of the last preparatory steps, comprehensive field tests has been running since the beginning of 2022. At the same time, the transmission is being adapted and homologated in numerous applications and will then be available on a large scale starting in 2023.

2021

Voith Turbo won the first customers for its new electric drive system in March: Northern Irish manufacturer Wrightbus, which is integrating the VEDS in its second-generation battery-electric and fuel-cell electric buses; and NFI subsidiary Alexander Dennis, which is fitting the VEDS in its upcoming double deck hydrogen bus. In June, Voith introduced a version of the VEDS for medium-duty applications. In August, Voith announced that the VEDS is fully certified and ready for series production; already it was undergoing homologation with Wrightbus, ADL, and other, unnamed OEMs. In September, Turkish manufacturer Otokar launched the e-Kent C 12m low-floor city bus with the VEDS installed.

2020

Voith Group made two acquisitions which relate to Voith Turbo's operations. On 29 April, the group bought a combined 59% shares (with PCS Holding) in Traktionssysteme Austria (TSA). TSA's expertise in electric drives will reportedly support Voith's position as a "technology-independent" supplier to OEMs. In July, the group acquired another electric drive specialist, ELIN Motoren. The company would reportedly retain independence as a brand, and while its primary focus is industrial applications, its technologies are relevant to automotive drive systems as well.

In December, Voith entered a strategic partnership with electrification specialist Orten Electric-Trucks, with the aim of retrofitting single, double deck and articulated buses as well as light- and medium-duty trucks with the VEDS. Orten's role is to handle integration of the drive system into used vehicles, supplying batteries, gateways, and auxiliaries from its own portfolio.

Voith Electrical Drive System (VEDS)
Description

The Voith Electrical Drive System (VEDS) is an electric direct drive system for OEM independent city bus (solo, double deck, school, and articulated buses) and coach applications with both battery-electric and fuel cell electric power sources. It combines a water-cooled permanent magnet motor with an inverter and control software; further auxiliary components are optionally possible. With the integrated system approach of the VEDS, all system components are perfectly aligned with each other.
