City buses with alternative drivelines account for nearly 60% of all city buses across EU27(+4) countries in 2021

Europe – The total number of alternative drivelines in city buses in European Union 27 countries plus the UK, Norway (NO), Iceland (ICE) and Switzerland totalled 8,911 units accounting for 59.2% of total city bus registrations in 2021 of 14,990 units, according to market analysis by Wim Chatrou of Chatrou CME Solutions of The Netherlands. This is near a seven percentage point increase on deliveries in 2020, when 7,787 city buses with alternative drivelines were delivered, accounting for 52.5% of the total city bus market that year of 14,842 units.

Sales of hybrid, electric and hydrogen fuel cell buses (sold in the EU27 countries plus 4 EEA countries) all saw substantial increases on sales from the year before, while sales of gas buses, which saw over 3,000 registered, decreased from 2020 for the first time since 2016 - see graph below.
