The commercial transport “ecosystem”: A report from the IAA Transportation 2022 press workshop

Germany – The return of the IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) commercial vehicle show in 2022 is remarkable in itself, given that the last exhibition was held in 2018; the biannual event should have taken place again in 2020, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But showgoers journeying to Hanover this September (20-25) will find something else to remark: a new title – ‘IAA Transportation’ – reflecting a soft reinvention of the show’s traditional format.

The VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie), the German automotive industry association and organiser of the IAA show, justified the name change, claiming that it represents their intention to showcase on-road transportation services “as a whole”. In other words, the primary focus of the exhibition is not the vehicles, but the commercial transport sector as an “ecosystem” of interconnected services and technologies getting people and goods from A to B.
