Nuvera signs MoU with Viritech to develop fuel cell powertrain

Nuvera E-Series Fuel Cell Engine

USA / UKNuvera Fuel Cells LLC of Billerica, Massachusetts, USA has signed a memorandum of understanding with Viritech Ltd of London, UK to pair Nuvera’s fuel cell engine with electric powertrain components developed by Viritech for commercial vehicle applications.

Nuvera says it will supply its ‘E-Series’ fuel cell engines to Viritech for testing with the ‘VPT60N’ electric powertrain. The Nuvera fuel cell engine will be integrated with a DC/DC converter, e-machine, inverter, and final drive unit, all designed by Viritech for OEM prototype and development vehicles. By collaborating with Viritech, Nuvera intends to “reduce timelines and lead times for fuel cell solutions”, according to CEO Kedar Murthy.

Nuvera and Viritech are also exploring opportunities to market, deploy, and support the VPT60N powertrain together for the on-road commercial vehicle segment. The two companies have previously collaborated on a prototype track car powered by fuel cells.
