MAN inaugurates battery production in Nuremberg and announces further EUR150m investment

Inauguration of battery production at MAN's facility in Nuremberg

Germany – In April, MAN Truck & Bus SE, a subsidiary of Traton based in Munich, Bavaria, launched production of commercial vehicle battery packs in Nuremberg and announced an investment of EUR150m to expand capacity in the next several years.

Completed in late 2024, the facility is now assembling its first battery packs in series for electric trucks and buses. At the plant inauguration, MAN announced that it would invest a further EUR150m to kickstart production of battery modules, i.e., assembled battery cells which are installed in the packs. Around EUR18m will be contributed by the federal government and the state government of Bavaria. In addition, the Bavarian government is funding research and development into battery chemistry, ageing, and safety with a further EUR30m.

The manufacturer also announced that series production of its heavy electric trucks will begin in Munich this June. Battery packs assembled in Nuremberg will be installed in the ‘eTGS’ and ‘eTGX’ models as well as the lighter truck and bus ranges. Overall, MAN’s recent investments in engine and battery production in Nuremberg amount to half a billion euros.
