For the first time, the legislation covers cars, vans, and heavy-duty vehicles in one single piece of legislation. The above-mentioned agreement retains the Euro 6 emissions limits for cars and vans but adds stricter limits for buses and trucks, whilst introducing new limits for particles emitted from the exhaust, tyres and brakes.

While the city of Jakarta commits to being fully electric by 2030, the Indonesian and South Korean governments have signed a bilateral cooperation agreement to develop a public transportation network using battery-powered buses across cities in Indonesia.

According to the Department for Transport, all new sales of cars and vans powered solely by an internal combustion engine (ICE) will be banned by 2035, with heavy-goods vehicles following suit in 2040. This has now become law in the UK, as part of the country's Net Zero Strategy.

EC trading tariff exemptions, which were agreed upon as part of the Brexit deal, were due to end on January 1, 2024, resulting in a 10% tariff on the export of European-built battery electric vehicles to the UK and vice-versa.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has mandated that all ICE heavy-duty trucks (>14,000 pounds) operating in the state be registered on the state’s Clean Truck Check* database by the end of January 2024 to undergo emissions inspections bi-annually. The purpose of the programme is to ensure all emissions-related equipment (on-board diagnostics) is functioning properly for the life of the vehicle.

Luca de Meo recently unveiled a roadmap for developing a competitive European green mobility ecosystem, co-signed by the heads of Europe’s largest commercial vehicle OEMs. The roadmap, submitted to the EU Parliament and Commission is premised on three pillars of supply, production and demand, encompassing views of all relevant industry stakeholders.

This is the largest zero-emission bus fleet in Western Europe, with more than one in nine buses now zero emission. Since 2021, all new buses joining the TfL fleet have been zero-emission.

Called Ruta Elétrica Andina the project proposes construction of battery charging stations along the Andean highway at intervals of every 200 km – initially the project is to run from Cartagena in northern Colombia to Ipiales, on the border with Ecuador.

A press statement from the EU Commission read: “The proposed amendment introduces a 100% zero-emission target for urban buses by 2035, while setting an intermediate target of 85% for this category by 2030. The Council agreed to exempt inter-urban buses from this target."

The Bill, if passed, is expected catalyse faster renewal of Brazil’s national bus fleets with more modern less polluting and less environmentally harmful vehicles.
