A well-established distributor of construction, materials handling and other machinery products, Sunway Trading and Manufacturing, a subsidiary of the Sunway Group, based in Sunway City, Malaysia, announced in February it has acquired Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Malaysia (DFCVM), the local distributor of China’s Dongfeng Motor Corporation.

Logistics company FGV Transport Services Sdn Bhd announced late last year it took delivery of 44 TGS 6x4 prime movers which was just recently introduced to the market in November 2021*, from MAN Truck & Bus (M) Sdn Bhd (MAN Malaysia) of Johor (a subsidiary of Germany’s MAN Truck & Bus SE). 

Bus body builder, Gemilang International Ltd (GML) has reported strong orders for bus bodies and finished buses in the first two months of 2022, particularly from international clients, following contract delays over the last two years due to the pandemic. 

The Malaysian commercial vehicle market over two tons gvw plunged by over 31% to 10,476 units in the third quarter of 2021 from 15,288 units a year earlier.

The Malaysian commercial vehicle market over 2 tons gvw surged by almost 142% to 9,820 units in the second quarter of 2021 after plunging by over 70% to 4,064 units in the same period of last year.

The Malaysian commercial vehicle market over 2 tons gvw rebounded strongly in the first quarter of 2021, by over 56% to 15,165 units after declining by 22% to 9,697 units in the same period of last year.

The Iskandar Regional Development Authority of Malaysia in March said its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project would likely cost MYR2.5bn (USD600m) and is expected to become operational in 2023.

Sales of medium and large buses and coaches contracted almost 50% to 87 units in the fourth quarter of 2020 from 171 units a year earlier, resulting in a 56% drop in full-year sales to 275 units.

Malaysia’s prime mover segment (on-road tractor units) dropped by 34% to 400 units in the fourth quarter of 2020 from strong year-earlier sales of 606 units, resulting in a 47% drop to 875 units over the full year.

Sales of rigid trucks over 2 tons gvw, excluding pickup trucks, increased by over 20% to 4,195 in the fourth quarter of 2020 after declining by almost 24% to 3,493 units in the same period of the previous year.

The Malaysian market for light vans and minibuses fell by almost 19% to 1,192 units in the fourth quarter of 2020 from already weak-year earlier sales of 1,369 units, resulting in a fall of almost 45% to 3,093 units over the full year from 5,586 units in 2019.

Sales of pickup trucks rebounded strongly in the fourth quarter of 2020, by over 37% to 13,145 units from 9,580 units in the same period of the previous year, wiping out most of the earlier declines and resulting in a fall in full-year sales of just 3.7% to 33,034 units.
