What a difference a year can make! A year ago, Truck & Bus Builder attended the “E-Bus Test” in the German city of Bonn, organised yearly by the German magazine Omnibus Spiegel. It is a fantastic opportunity for European journalists to ride on and test drive the latest electric buses, some of which have yet to launch in the market. In this regard, the 2025 edition of the e-bus test was no different. However, the outlook for the electric bus market in Europe is less certain now than it was even just twelve months ago. A representative of Stadtwerke Bonn, the operator of Bonn’s urban transport system which hosted the e-bus test at its depot, told attendees at the event that it is no longer looking for incentives to purchase electric buses from the European Union. Those dried up a while ago, and the city of Dortmund – to give just one example – has gone back to purchasing diesel buses. There is not a great deal of hope either that the new government in Germany will announce further support for electric buses and charging infrastructure.

According to Scania, the new e-chassis was developed to meet the demands of medium- to heavy-duty operations with an increased passenger capacity compared to the 4x2.

The financial results of Traton - which includes the MAN, Scania, International, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus brands - remained steady compared to the year before, with sales revenues improving by just 1% from EUR46,872m in 2023 to EUR47,473m in 2024.

In addition to the four- and five-pack configurations offered previously, Scania is now allowing customers to specify three battery packs, with a total energy capacity of 312 kWh.

The truck developed by Scania is a 230-kW series hybrid running primarily on battery-electric power, with a 120-kW petrol-powered generator to provide backup energy.

Since November of last year, Scania has sent employees to the ‘Ett’ plant at Skellefteå in northern Sweden to assist with the ramp-up of cell production, according to a Reuters report.

Scania has committed to supplying Weber this year with approximately 20,000 tonnes of used sand from its foundry in Södertälje, a waste byproduct from the casting of engine components which would ordinarily be sent to landfill.

Customers of MAN and Scania who make use of MAN ‘Charge&Go’ or Scania ‘Charging Access’ will now be able to use Hubject’s ‘Intercharge’ network of charging points.

Scania says that, with “Complete Fleet”, it addresses the fact that many operators have mixed fleets of trucks and trailers of different ages and from different manufacturers.
