With this pilot, Volvo hopes to earn “regulatory and public trust and acceptance of autonomous technologies”.

As part of its ‘Blue Service Contract’, offered to North American customers, Volvo NA is now using an adaptive maintenance system which dynamically changes service intervals based on the performance and application of the truck.

An initial production run of 400 models is now being delivered to dealerships across North America, including day cab and sleeper models.

Volvo NA will take over CVG’s ‘Cab Structures’ business, including its assembly plant in Kings Mountain, North Carolina – which is where CVG assembles medium- and heavy-duty cabs for Mack Trucks – for approximately USD40m.

By using HVO instead of diesel, Volvo claims it can replace up to 1,125,000 gallons of diesel annually, achieving an emissions reduction of 75% to 85% from its operations in North America.

Volvo NA has not divulged the location of the newly announced plant in Mexico, but it will reportedly cover 1.7m square feet when it is opened for production in two years’ time.
