JCB has stated that retrofitting the hydrogen engine - which is made for construction and agricultural machinery - into the Mercedes truck took just a few days.

The Liverpool-based retrofit firm says it is initially contracted by Aberdeen City Council to convert 35 vehicles, including waste collection vehicles and road sweepers.

The 17Xe ePowertrain, which is being tested in an Electra truck, is the result of a collaborative effort between Meritor and Danfoss Editron.

Having invested GBP 100 million in a project to produce super-efficient hydrogen engines, this multi-year project has reached a major production milestone with its 50th hydrogen combustion engine coming off the group engine line in Foston, UK.

The production facility will be built by Hygen Energy, an Oxford-based firm led by Wrightbus owner and Chairman Jo Bamford.

The project brings together a consortium led by HVS and includes Fusion Processing and Asda.
