The 8.7-metre version of the ‘Sigma’ range of battery-electric buses was publicly presented for the first time since it was launched alongside the 9.4-metre Sigma in May.

The 12-metre bus is a hydrogen-powered variant of the ‘e-ATA’ line of battery-electric buses, fitted with a 70-kW fuel cell providing a range of 500 kilometres.

The joint demonstration programme applied Westport’s ‘H2 HPDI’ fuel system to Scania’s 13-litre ‘CBE1’ diesel engine platform, which achieved a peak brake thermal efficiency of 51.5%, compared to a 50% diesel baseline.

The company said the design philosophy of the new XD was built on the same values as the “International Truck of the Year 2022” winning XF and XG long-haul commercial vehicles, in terms of driver comfort, quality, efficiency and safety.

The C-550, C-650 and C-750 have maximum power ratings of 5.2 kW, 6 kW and 6.8 kW respectively, and will serve small trucks and vans with bodies of up to 52 cubic metres.

The new-generation NMC lithium battery packs, which EvoBus produced in partnership with Akasol, contain cylindrical cells that provide 50% greater energy density.

All vehicles will have engines with Mercedes-Benz’s proven BlueTec 6 technology, which incorporates a more robust gas after-treatment system, and which reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 80% and particulate matter emissions by 50%.

The strategic partnership aims to build up expertise, process development and construct protypes of electric motors at Daimler’s Gaggenau technical centre for electric drive components.

Cummins used the IAA to reveal its new medium-duty hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engine, which has been developed as part of the European H2-ICE project and Destination Zero Initiative.
