The 100,000th engine was an XCURSOR 13 NG, a multi-fuel engine designed for the truck market, providing significant reductions in CO2 emissions and high reliability with an expected lifetime of 1.2 million kilometres.

Headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, and with offices in Gothenburg, Sweden and Brescia, Italy, Cespira was formed by the two companies to commercialise Westport’s high-pressure direct injection technology.

In July, American powertrain manufacturer, Cummins Inc, opened a new test facility at its engine plant in Darlington in the northeast of England, with the attendance of T&BB and other members of the trade press. The company has carried out engine testing at Darlington for many years, but the new facility represents a definitive change in approach to product development and evaluation. While the older test cells are solely designed to assess engines, the new facility can accommodate an entire truck or bus for whole vehicle testing. Moreover, the building which houses the new facility is specifically made to safely test gas and hydrogen combustion vehicles.

The plant is managed by the company’s local subsidiary, Yuchai Power System (Thailand) Company Ltd, based in Samut Prakan just outside Bangkok.

The company showcased a variety of powertrain systems, including natural gas-powered engines, and electric propulsion (e-propulsion) systems.

With the upcoming IAA Transportation event in Hanover, Germany (September 17-22), just around the corner, a company that is hoping to make a splash is Italian powertrain manufacturer, FPT Industrial (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Iveco Group).

The companies have successfully completed field tests of the new Cummins X15N 15-litre natural gas engine in combination with Allison’s 4000 Series fully automatic transmission. The results showed significant improvements in fuel efficiency, engine braking, and power during shifting, making the combination ideal for heavy-duty operations.

FPT will emphasise its advancements in sustainable transportation technologies, focusing on low-emission and zero-emission solutions. The company will showcase a variety of powertrain systems, including natural gas-powered engines, and electric propulsion (e-propulsion) systems.

Established in 1974, the Jamestown Engine Plant is located outside the village of Lakewood, on the western edge of Jamestown, New York.

Using biomethane in its gas engine, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 95% compared with current diesel engines, FPT Industrial states.
