Greg Marx, Applications Engineer, Power & Propulsion Solutions at BAE Systems, provided an overview of the evolution of fuel cell architecture in transit buses in North America in a presentation at APTA Expo 2023 held in early October in Orlando, Florida, USA.

Built for the U.S. Department of Energy’s SuperTruck II programme, the prototype truck, described by Paccar as a “testbed for future product technologies”, was developed in order to improve freight ton efficiency by 100% compared to a 2009 baseline.

The truck, branded as ‘Paul Hydrogen Power’ (PH2P), is built on a 16-tonne Mercedes-Benz ‘Atego’ glider chassis and is powered by the ‘Voith Electrical Drive System’ (VEDS), which provides 310 kW of continuous power and 410 kW of peak power.
