The ‘Hyla’-branded fuel station was opened at the end of July in Etobicoke, a district within the city of Toronto.

This will create a network of green hydrogen production facilities for various purposes (international shipping, trucking etc). This aligns with California’s plans to cut CO2 emissions by two million tonnes annually and reach carbon neutrality by 2045.

The aim is to target a module level of efficiency of less than 36kWh/kg and drive down the price, making it much more competitive as an alternative fuel/energy option in sectors such as heavy transportation.

According to Global Vice President  Eric Guter, each high-capacity station will be able to refuel 200 heavy-duty trucks or 2000 cars per day. This is a strategic move by the company (the largest supplier of hydrogen in the world) which already operates six hydrogen refuelling stations in Southern California. California was chosen due to the large green State subsidies available.

This project will study the feasibility of commercialising the use of international liquefied green hydrogen supply chains, including LH2-terminals, large- and medium-sized overseas shipping and large-scale liquid hydrogen storage.

2023 saw the company planned to invest USD 530 million in the development of hydrogen technologies to create a complete hydrogen value chain from the production, distribution (storage tanks), consumption (hydrogen engines) and management (telematics) of green hydrogen at scale.

The funding package, dubbed ‘Hy2Move’, is the fourth “Important Project of Common European Interest” (IPCEI) related to hydrogen which the European Commission has approved over the past two years.

Hype claims the run the world’s largest fleet of hydrogen-powered taxis, a business which it began in 2015.

The new fuel station is designed to specifically accommodate long distance hydrogen trucks, such as the fuel cell trucks which are produced by Quantron.

INEOS Inovyn says it is supply the liquid hydrogen to power the five customer trials of the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Trucks next month. The first of the five customer trials will see logistics partner VERVAEKE, transport various chemicals to numerous INEOS clients around Germany. This one year test will give Daimler valuable real-world insight into the capability and reliability of the vehicle.

“The 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge”, a government programme which supported the development of the fuel station, says the opening of the station on Highway 2 marked a “significant milestone” in its project to put 5,000 hydrogen or dual fuel vehicles on the road in Alberta province.

The Department of Energy claims that, by funding these projects, it will facilitate the production of up to 50,000 new medium- and heavy-duty trucks and the supply of enough hydrogen to fuel nearly 170,000 long haul trucks in a single year.
